Every five years each male Roman citizen had to register in Rome for the census, his slave would enlist him. He had to take care of his family, wife, children, slaves and riches. The mother would almost always home, working on household needs, and taking care of the children. The father would usually go to trade or work on the farm and the children would go to work with their dad.
