Two Big Questions:
How does a civilization stand the test of time?
For a civilization to stand the test of time, it should be in a good location, with lots of land for exploring, and farming. Water nearby for trading, and for fishing. It should also have topography that is helpful in defense: hills, mountains, rivers etc. A big factor, also, is having a well trained, and good military. If the elements aren't enough, you need more protection. Another thing, would be arts, (culture), and religion. Those will make the people happy, giving them something to do, and making the people more creative and artistic in general. Lastly, a civilization needs education. It's important for the people to have an education along with what they do for work.

Why did Ancient Rome stand the test of time?
Mainly, because it meets all of the requirements for a civilization to stand the test of time. It's next to the Mediterranean, so they can trade, and fish. It has hills for defense, and an excellent military. They have lots of arts and culture, the people are creative, and happy. They also have religion, and were happy and content thinking the gods were always looking over them, and keeping them safe. Lastly, though we didn't talk about it much, Ancient Rome had a good education, there were many Roman schools for the children to go to. As you can see, Ancient Rome stood the test of time for many reasons, and is still remembered today as an amazing civilization.
How did Ancient Rome begin?
The Romans had a story to explain how Rome began: Twin boys, Romulus and Remus, were the sons of Mars (the Roman god or war). An evil uncle took them as babies from their mother and threw them into the River Tiber to drown. The babies floated to land, and a mother wolf fed and cared for them. Later a herdsman looked after the twins until they grew up. Years later, Mars told his twin sons to build a city where they had been found. The city was Rome. One day, Remus made fun of the wall Romulus had built around the city. The twins argued, fought and Romulus killed Remus. Today, historians and archaeologists agree that people were living in Rome long before 753 B.C., but the legend is one of the most famous in world history.
